It is soluble in water at 15° C and in alcohol or ether. It is important not to confuse bitter almonds with sweet almonds or apricot kernels, as they are different.
CONSTITUENTS:
amygdalin, benzaldehyde, leucine, valine,phenylalanine,lysine,and arginine.
USES:
Bitter almond oil is used for various purposes like cosmetics, creams and as an essential oil. However this Essential Oil also has some medicinal uses such as, an antibacterial, anti-itch, local anesthetic and muscle relaxant. Amygdalin, found in bitter almonds, converts into toxic hydrocyanic acid (HCN) in the body, which can depress the nervous system and cause severe respiratory issues. In contrast, sweet almonds (Prunus dulcis), the common edible variety, do not contain these harmful substances.
Bitter almond oil is sometimes also used for treating stretch marks and other ailments, but there is no solid scientific evidence supporting these applications.
